WEIGHT MANAGEMENT IS EASIER THAN YOU THINK-December 8, 2007

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT IS EASIER THAN YOU THINK

The holidays are a tough time to think about weight management. Here are some techniques that you can use during the holidays and beyond. Portion control is great way to begin. Start by cutting every portion that you put on your plate in half. If you go to a restaurant, eat half of the portion of soup, half of the portion of salad, half of the main course etc.

In the beginning of starting this technique you may find that you are hungry in between meals. No problem, just eat. Eat fruits, vegetables or lean protein, or substitute with a high quality protein shake (not whey protein). Over time your body will reset its metabolism and you will not feel hungry or deprived.

What about desserts? If you are able to get rid of them entirely then do so. If you are going to feel deprived and tortured then go ahead and have SOME IN MODERATION. MODERATION IS THE KEY.

You can use portion control even during your holiday dinner. Eat everything you like but cut your portions in half.

Lastly, drink water. Yes water. Water is vitally important. It helps to flush all of the impurities out of our system and its shear volume will make your brain think that you are full. To know if you are drinking enough water your urine should be like "pale white wine" not like "mellow yellow". So go ahead and enjoy your holiday dinner without guilt.

Why No Whey Protein
Written by Richard, on 10-12-2007 02:17
Dr. Inselman,

I enjoyed your weight management article. As one who has a stack of styrofoam leftovers from restaurants in my fridge, i truly value the idea of portion control. I need ask 2 questions:

1. What is a high quality protein shake?

2. Why not a whey protein shake?

I'm fascinated to know these answers, since i am always trying to learn and improve.

Thank you.

Weight Management is Easier than You Thi

Richard, thank you for your post. I'm glad you are enjoying the newsletter. Whey protein is really a waste product of the cheese industry that somebody had the very bright entrepreneurial idea of harvesting and selling. They used to sell it to weight lifters but when the protein craze came about they started selling it to everybody. Whey is very very hard to digest by the human body. Most weight lifters that I treated when I practiced suffered from very bad diarrhea as a result of their whey shakes. It was interesting stop the whey shakes stop the diarrhea. It affects the general population in the same way. If people don't get diarrhea, which they may not because they consume less than weight lifters; then gas and bloating are the main complaints.

Because whey is literally a by-product (garbage) it is very cheap to make and a great source of profit. When you read the labels and they say "designer protein" they are not kidding, it really has been redesigned from garbage to something ingestible.

Much better high quality protein sources are soy protein (must watch if the person had breast cancer because of the natural estrogens the medical community frowns on soy protein's consumption), and egg white protein. Egg white protein in my opinion is one the best and most easily forms of digestible protein around. As you probably guessed it is VERY expensive which is why it is very hard to find.

Unfortunatley nutrition in our country is all about profit. Most of the supplements that are sold are absolute garbage. My favorite picture when I practiced was of an xray that I took on a 44 year old female that was told to take 1000mg of calcium a day to prevent osteoporosis. Sitting in her colon totally undigested and waiting to be passed out was her 1000mg caplet that was very visible on the xray.
