Why are you reading this article? Let’s face it if your practice was rocking, your time wouldn’t be spent reading this article; you would be spending your time treating patients, buying some new toy, or donating your money to charity.
Unfortunately, most practitioners are reactive instead of proactive. What this does is cause the proverbial roller coaster practice. What would happen if you consistently planned your office strategies and tactics, created dynamic consistent procedures, and created meaningful policies?
How to Determine Where to Begin
A great way to begin is by answering the following questions:
- What are the obstacles that you are facing right now that are stopping you from growing a great practice?
- Why do you want to grow a great practice?
- How will you grow a great practice?
These three questions will allow you to figure out exactly what you need to do. Michael Gerber, the author of The E Myth and The E Myth Revisited advised working on your practice not just in it. That is profound wisdom. Most practitioners spend all of their time working in their practice and very little time to no time working on their practice. What do you think would happen if that one piece changed?
I had the privilege of working with a terrific chiropractor from Detroit. In 2006 she grossed $375,000. In 2008 she grossed $102,000. That equated to a scary 72% drop in business. All she kept telling me was “Dr. lnselman you don’t understand the economy here in Detroit. We have been crushed because of the car industry.” I told her “let’s just focus on the three questions above and let’s grow your practice.” She reluctantly came aboard and we made a list of all the obstacles.
She said her major obstacle was a failure to get new patients since most people were now unemployed and had lost their health insurance. Why did you want new patients was the next question? Her answer surprised me. “She said to regain her pride.” Now that I knew the “what and why” I was able to employ both strategic and tactical methods to help her overcome her obstacles. The result: 18 months later in the face of the same terrible Detroit economy, her practice has grown 119.5%. She is well on her way of rebuilding and surpassing her previous numbers.
How to Double or Even Triple Your Practice
If anyone tells you that you can’t double or even triple you practice then they don’t understand determination. Determination plus the correct tactical and strategic
methods = HUGE PRACTICE GROWTH. Now don’t get me wrong, I am a realist and
there are very few people who can actually pull off a double or triple in one year (because they lack persistent determination) …. But what would happen if you grew a meager 20% year after year?
The bottom line is your growth depends on your determination plus strategic and tactical methods done over and over again. That is the way to getting consistent positive growth. The really nice thing is ANYONE CAN DO IT.
What Growing a Practice is NOT Based on
Growing a practice is not based on intelligence, money, the town where you live, your looks, your personality (you must have some bedside manner though), or your background. Growing a practice has everything to do with determination, and structured tactics and strategy. 80% of success is based in ‘the why” and 20% of success is based in “the how”.
In Summary
Be analytical about improving your practice. If you don’t use statistics then start. As Michael Gerber says, Work ON every aspect of your practice with the utmost love, and precision. Create a habit to achieving one small change and improvement every week without fail NO EXCUSES ALLOWED. Just think in just 52 weeks from now, you’ll be in a hugely improved practice.
What do you do Next?
My 32 years of experience as a top producing chiropractor, life coach, business coach, and entrepreneur has taught me that the key to any success is to ask three questions. What do you want?
