Are You Stressing or Enjoying Life As A Small Business Owner?

As the CEO of a small business, ou undoubtedly has a lot on your plate. There are employees who need to be trained; new products to be introduced; bills to be paid, and new customers to be procured.

You also would like to see your family and get some long-needed sleep. Yes being the CEO of a small business can be grueling. The question is does it have to be? Are you busy? Are you unable to do the things that YOU want to do?

Lack of time is a lack of priorities. Remember YOU and YOU alone get to create your world. If you are too busy it might be time to reexamine your systems and your rules. Being busy is a choice. Enjoying a stress-free, profitable and productive life is a choice too. Which do you prefer?

Here are some ideas to think about:

  1. Create a morning routine – that fuels your mind, body, and spirit. Affirmations, journal writing, meditation and goal setting is the perfect way to begin your day.
  2. Take control of your life and business – remember you are the CEO damn it! That means that it is YOUR world and YOU get to make the rules. If you want to play golf on Tuesday’s then why aren’t you? If you want to go to your son’s baseball game then why are you still in the office?
  3. If it is not fun, or if you don’t want to do it then-delegate it out. The key to success and time management is you should be doing ONLY the things that you want to do; or doing the things that only you can do. Avoiding burn-out and frustration is paramount.

Five Major Mistakes that Plumbing Companies Make

If you are a plumber then I don’t need to tell you that competition is fierce. Having successfully coached some very large plumbing companies I can share with you some common mistakes that are made in your trade. Take the time to go through the list and correct any of the mistakes that you or your team may be making.

  1. Wear a uniform with a name tag-Every industry has an official or un-official type of uniform. Baseball players wear a team uniform that brings them and their fans closer in their bond. Bankers on Wallstreet wear a shirt and tie uniform which denotes power and organization. Wearing a uniform in the trades denotes that you are a professional company with standards. Think of your own buying habits. When you have a repairman come into your home would you prefer that he is neatly dressed in a uniform or wearing last nights jeans and shirt with beer stains and mustard all over the shirt?
  2. Train your technicians-Remember your technicians are the front-line people that are going to close the sale as well as be able to upsell the job. If they don’t know and understand how a drain field works, how can they recommend upselling enzymes to put in the septic tank? Empower your employees with technical skills, communication skills, and sales skills.
  3. Train your telephone staff-You do not get a second chance to make a good first impression. Your telephone staff is the first contact to you making a sale. If she is rude, dis-organized, or not skillful in getting your technician into the house then the sale will be lost before it even began. Spend the time and money to hire the right people and then to train them in all aspects of their job.
  4. Not Marketing Correctly-I see too many plumbing companies that are either not marketing at all; or are using such antiquated techniques that it is no wonder their business is struggling. In this economy you must use strategic-based marketing to get the best results. You must create a UVP (unique value proposition) and base your marketing from that. In addition you must know who your ideal customer is. Then you must learn how to acquire that best customer.
  5. Not Pricing jobs correctly-I don’t need to tell you that one mistake, or one mis-calculation causes your profit to be flushed down the proverbial toilet. You must factor in cost of goods and then what I like to call a “mistake factor” which will ensure your profitability.

5 Things that all CEO’s of Small Businesses Need to Know

Being the CEO of a small business can be  grueling. Everybody wants a piece of you. Your sales people want a piece of you. The IRS wants a piece of you. Your insurance agent wants a piece of, and your marketing department wants a piece of you. Then factor in the kids little league game, your wife’s birthday and the hamster wheel keeps turning!

If you are the CEO of a small business then knowing and deploying these five tricks will help your stress level and your productivity.

  1. Learn how to delegate-You must not do everything yourself, nobody can. Learn to do only the things that you are expert at; and, delegate the rest.
  2. Hire the right people and put the right people in the right seats on the bus-Hiring is very serious business. It is way too costly and way too stressful to hire the wrong person. Make sure that you have a clear understanding of the candidates expectations and skill-sets. Then make sure that they match the needs and qualifications of the job.
  3. Take a vacation every three months-Yes every three months. Avoiding burn-out is paramount. Please note that a vacation does not have to mean getting on a plane to Tahiti. It can simply mean not going to the office or taking calls while you lounge at home or are on the golf course for a few days.
  4. Grow yourself-Continued self-development has been proven to help ease the stress and burden of a demanding job like yours. Learn how to meditate. Learn how to visualize. Learn how to calm negative self-talk.
  5. Have more gratitude-Gratitude gives you altitude. It is imperative that you find ways to have gratitude every single day. Think about it. You are able to read this blog. There are many who are blind. You can hear your kids fighting in the other room. Deaf people cannot. Gratitude is so important that each night before I go to bed I say out loud all of the things that I  am grateful for.

Is Your Support Staff Hurting Your Business?

Believe it or not your staff can literally make or break your business. It is imperative that you hire the right people, train them properly and put them into the right positions. You only get one shot to make a good first impression, and a poorly trained staff will make a poor impression every time they answer the phone or interact with a client or customer.

About 90% of the businesses that I coach ask me to train their staff. The major reasons that my clients have me train their staff is that they simply do not know what to do; or, they do not have the time. This article will give you some easy to follow steps.

  1. A great staff is made not born. Start by hiring the right people.
  2. Check references before hiring
  3. Be slow to hire and quick to fire.
  4. Give clear expectation
  5. Train in “bite sized” pieces
  6. Make sure your staff has ownership of these topics:

*Telephone procedures

* Communication procedures

* Advanced personality training

* New client or customer telephone procedures

* Established client or customer telephone procedures

* Telephone shopper procedures

7. Teach the assistant how to attract new business so they pay for their salary

8. Teach the assistant how to build relationships with clients or customers that stimulate referrals

9.  Teach systems that create a stress-free environment

10. Teach front desk mastery

11.  Teach team building-so everyone supports and helps one another

12. Teach how to create a WOW experience for all new clients or customers

13. Teach how to create a second visit experience that encourages referrals

14. Teach collection procedures

15. Teach how to self-motivate

These are the basic fundamental skills that your support staff must master. For them to master it you or someone else must train them. Invest the necessary time and money to train your staff because a well-trained staff will pay you dividends for years to come.

Four Common Marketing Mistakes-Don’t You Make Them Too!

Stop wasting time and money. Those two resources are too precious to waste. If you are looking to expand your market share then you have to spend money and time; to make money, and earn time. This article will focus on the top five mistakes that will waste time, waste money, and sabotage your goals.

  1. Forgetting your Current Clients/Customers/Patients-Please, please, please do not make this mistake. Your business is in business because of your present customer-base. yes it is important to get new business but make shure that you acknowledge, nurture, and celebrate your present base. Our clients are taught many methods to improve their CVA(customer visit average). Remember if you sold one more product or service to your present base you would not have to work so hard at getting new business.
  2. Talking About Yourself-Do you know who your clients care about? It is them and only them. Respectfully they can give a rat’s as% about you and your accomplishments. Now don’t get me wrong;  your customer base does want you to be accomplished but don’t sell them on your accomplishments. Instead use your accomplishments in your UVP (Unique Value Proposition). Your unique value proposition (UVP) is what separates you from every other similar business or practice. It is why people will want to give YOU their hard-earned money. Our clients learn early on how to create a UVP and use it effectively in all of their marketing campaigns.
  3. Not Having a Call To Action-Why would you ever spend dollars or time without giving your prospect a call to action? At the bottom of this article and right here is a call to action Click here for a complimentary no-obligation consultation and find out for yourself how I can help you grow your business ethically, legally and with integrity; get more free time and have fun again.  Get to the next level and beyond. Stop wishing, praying and hoping and take the meaningful step that will get you to where you want to be. For the prospect who is willing to learn more about your product or service it enables them to click, call, or email so they can avail themself of your service or product.
  4. Not Keeping Accurate Metrics-Would you drive from New York to Florida without ever looking at your speedometer or gas gauge? Of course not. Those gauges give you vital information. The same with analytic tools like Google Analytics. Whatever metrics you use it is imperative to study them so you can tweak your campaigns accordingly.

How to Organize Your Business

Dis-Organization

If your business is not organized, good luck. Along with communication and computer skills, organizational skills are one of the most important transferable job skills a worker can possess. Companies need workers who can stay organized and focus on the projects at hand.

The most important areas that management should focus on with employees are the following: General organization, planning, time management, and scheduling.

General Organizational Skills- Managers want to focus training sessions that will facilitate the employee accomplishing the daily tasks of the job. We teach our clients the specifics of time management. if your employee is not getting a full sixty minutes out of every hour then you are over-paying that employee and they are not being efficient.

The old adage time is money is so true. When we do an accounting with our clients of time wasted converted to dollars spent, the results are often vomit-inducing!

Task Planning– Projects are usually divided into many different tasks, and workers must plan their tasks ahead of time to bring the project to fruition. Our clients are taught the skill-sets that create peace, harmony and spirit of cooperation. When these objectives are met, you will find that your employees morale improves along with their productivity.

Scheduling– This is the 10,000 pound elephant in the room. Scheduling involves allocating a time period for specific tasks or workload, and then assigning tasks to certain employees. Our service industry clients and restaurant owners know this problem probably better than any business on the planet. These businesses in particular must be able to account for their busy times and have enough man or woman-power on the job to take care of the customers. If there is over-staffing management is wasting dollars. if there is under-staffing, customer service diminishes.

There are many facets to organization that are too numerous for this short space. Take the necessary time and resources to train your employees on organizational skills and you will be richly rewarded.

You deserve to be happy, respected, and living the life you desire. If you still feel that you are struggling, you will be thrilled to know that Dr. Paul S. How to Have Another Record Week In Your Business

business growth

Our clients’ businesses have grown over 42% this year and we couldn’t be more proud of each and every one of them! This article will distill down the steps that you can take right now so you can experience tremendous growth in your business or practice too. Here is the great news…the action steps are not difficult! These are the actual step and topics that we have taught some our most successful clients.

  1. Identify your purpose. If you are in business or in a professional practice to just to “make money” then good luck. Look at any successful business on the planet. Walmart, Target, Ford, etc. It became successful because it fixed a problem, enhanced lives, or did something better or cheaper than a competitor. Making money is the by-product of a good business not the reason to enter the business. Your purpose, mission and vision will help you identify your reason for getting up everyday and staying with your business even when things get rough. Your action step is to create your vision, mission, and purpose statements.
  2. A goal by definition is a wish or a dream with a timeline around it and appropriate action steps. I want to earn $5 million dollars this year is a wish not a goal. So many clients when they first begin coaching with me make this mistake which costs them tremendous opportunity. Every September through December we go through a formal goal setting process. The process leaves our clients with a literal 365 day marketing calendar that, if the action steps are actually done; it is virtually impossible not to grow your business or practice. Goals can be created anytime of the year, however make September-December your new ritual going forward. Your action step is to create meaningful goals complete with timelines and action steps.
  3. Your unique value proposition (UVP) is what separates you from every other similar business or practice. It is why people will want to give YOU their hard-earned money. Our clients learn early on how to create a UVP and use it effectively in all of their marketing campaigns. Your action step is to create your UVP.
  4. Throwing crap up aganst the wall and hoping something will stick is tactical-based marketing. The problem is tactical-based marketing hasn’t been effective since the late 1990’s. A strategist will slaughter a tactition every single time. Our clients learn the art and science of strategic-based marketing and their growth proves it. Your action step is to create a minimum of five stategic-based campaigns.
  5. Knowing what marketing techniques work in which part of the economic cycle is imperative to your spending your marketing dollars wisely; and getting a great return on investment. The buying funnel has been around since the late 1800’s. The buying funnel is based on economic cycles not guesswork. When you understand how to use the buying funnel you will waste fewer marketing dollars and boost your returns. Your action step is learn more about the buying funnel and how it can be applied to your marketing strategies.

How to Grow a Business in Uncertain Times

Uncertainty

Uncertainty is not the friend of small businesses. As a matter of fact business hates uncertainty; just look at what the stock market or bond market does in uncertain times; they usually tank. This article is being written on October 25, 2016. In thirty years from now when somebody is reading this ancient blog, the same principles that I am going to discuss will be relevent.

Economic principles do not change; only the days and years change. Let’s get to it. At present there is major uncertainty in the United States and the world at large. We have a presidential election that will be decided in two weeks. No matter who wins, Trump or Clinton there will be great uncertainty in the air.

  • Who will be appointed to the supreme court?
  • What will happen with Isis?
  • What about race relations in our country?
  • How much will taxes go up or down?
  • Will they raise the capital gains Tax?
  • Will they tax imports?
  • Will legalized marijuana lead to more traffic fatalities?
  • What about health insurance? As of this writing premiums are anticipated to rise double digits?
  • Inflation anyone?
  • Are you now certain that there is much uncertainty in the world?

What do have people always done and what will people continue to do in times of uncertainty? They hunker down and don’t spend money unless it is absolutely necessary.

So how do you grow a business in uncertain times?

  1. Get more exposure-market “harder and smarter” don’t cut advertising
  2. Get organized-you cannot afford not to get a full sixty minutes out of every hour
  3. Create written goals complete with meaningful action steps
  4. Look for opportunity. Is this a good time to acquire your competition? Remember when the stock market crashes it is usually a great time to buy not sell
  5. Don’t fire your advisers. Their advice is needed most when things are bad. It keeps you from making emotional decisions
  6. Think outside the box. Utilize strategic-based marketing that will allow you to harness the power of scientific marketing
  7. Hire a business coach to guide you and hold you accountable. Your coach will help you create or maintain a steady course that will help you achieve your goals faster than you could on your own. Just look at the show Shark Tank. These entrepreneurs get backing and coaching that enable them to break-through to heights they only dreamed of achieving
  8. Accountability is crucial in tough times. Can you imagine how your business would be if you only implemented half of the great ideas that you had this year?
  9. Work on your head space. If your head space is stressed, confused, afraid and uncertain it will be difficult to grow your business
  10. Train your staff. You cannot afford to lose any prospects because of poor training of staff.
